Trout/Bass - New Germany Lake (MD)

According to the Maryland DNR, this park is a "best-kept secret." Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, it sits between Big Savage and Meadow Mountains and definitely has a high elevation feel as a result of the crystal clear water mirroring the tall pine trees that surround the lake. The lake is surrounded by 10 miles of trails as well as a boat launch (electric motors only – 39.634169,-79.121245) for those who do not want to fish the shoreline. Trout enthusiasts may want to follow the Green Trail that runs an easy 1.6 miles along the headwaters of Poplar Lick, a brook trout stream. The lake also has a vibrant population of bass, bluegills and catfish. Unlike many of the other lakes in the Maryland State Park inventory, there is no formal trail dedicated to encircling the lake. The best access is from the eastern side adjacent to the camping areas. The water is deepest at the southern end since it transitions into a muddy marshland to the north. Facilities include a beach, boat rental and nature center. Visitors can rent cabins or stay at the primitive campsites (central bathhouse with restrooms and showers available). Getting There: North: From 1-68, take exit 24 onto Avilton Lonaconing Road. Turn right onto Lower New Germany Road heading south. Turn left onto Twin Churches Road. It becomes Westernport Road. Turn right onto McAndrews Hill Road and follow it to the lake. Parking is on the left. South: From Westernport, drive north on MD 36/Victory Post Road. It becomes new Georges Creek Road SW. Turn right on Middle Street. Turn left on Sugar Maple Road SW. Turn left onto Moores Run Road. Turn right onto Legislative Road SW. At the "T" intersection, turn right to stay on Legislative Road SW (MD 939). Turn left on Bartlett Street (name changes to Bartlett Run Road SW followed by Russell Road). Turn right onto Westernport Road. Turn left onto McAndrews Hill Road and follow it to the lake. Parking is on the left.
